Ballater is a Victorian village that is located on the east of the Cairngorms National Park.  Ballater is known as the eastern gateway to the Cairngorms National park. Ballater village is just a small drive to the famous Balmoral estate which is owed and used by the Royal Family.

Balmoral Castle

Balmoral Castle has rich history within the royal family since it was bought in 1848. Balmoral castle is the royal families Scottish home in which they visit fequently.

Royal Lochnagar Distillery

Royal Lochnagar Distillery is located near Balmoral Castle and sits at the foot of some of the mountains in the Cairngorms national park. The distillery combines the traditional pagoda kiln heads and share the story of Royal Lochnagar and its malt whisky.

Cairngorm Mountain

The Cairngorm Mountain resort is one of the top tourist attractions in the Cairngorms.  The resort is based over 1000m above sea level and has a resturant, viewing platform, gin bar and shop. There is a railway that can take you up to the resort.

Loch Muick

Loch Muick is a freshwater loch located near the Balmoral estate just a short drive from Ballater. The Loch is 3.5 km in length and 0.5 km in width with a depth of 78m.

Walks In Ballater

Ballater is a popular area in the Cairngorms national park with people passing by and staying every day. Ballater is one of the best places in the UK for adventurous activities. Ballater is surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, it is home to some of the most popular walks Cairngorms. There is a variety of walks around Ballater varying in difficulty and length to suit beginner hikers and more experienced hikers. Below are some of the breath taking walks within the Ballater area that the national park has to offer. 

Ballater Hiking Trails

1. Carthie easter balmoral and cairns

Distance -      10.5 km

Time -                3  h

Elevation -      376 m

Difficulty -       Moderate

This trail takes in a number of the cairns in which commemorate members of the British Royal family on the Balmoral estate. Most of the cairns on this path were commissioned by Queen Victoria to commemorate the lives of various family members. This route has rich history and is a fairly moderate walk. 2. Ben Macdui

Distance -      16.1 km

Time -                7 h

Elevation -      827 m

Difficulty -       Hard

This long hike to Britans second highest mountain the route includes rocky ascents and sometimes unclear paths. The route is not too strenuous but can be difficult to navigate especially on the summit plateau if weather is bad. Find this route here

3. Loch Muick Circular

Distance -      11.9 km

Time -                2.5 h

Elevation -      187 m

Difficulty -       Moderate

This peaceful trail does a loop around Loch Muick. Most of this walk has a narrow stony path that snakes around the edge of the Loch. There are impressive views throughout looking across the lake and into the hills. Find this route here
