Introduction To Bethesda

Bethesda is a small town located just outside the north west of Snowdonia National Park. Bethesda is very well connected to the Ogwen valley which is home to stunning mountains such as Tryfan and Pen Yr Ole Wen and of course the Llyn Ogwen lake.

​Bethesda has plenty of accommodation, cute cafes and is home to the Penrhyn Quarry which holds one of the longest zip line in the UK.

Tryfan

Tryfan is a mountain located in the north of Snowdonia in the Ogwen Valley, it is known as the most recognisable peak in Wales and forms part of the Glyderau group of mountains. Tryfan stands at 918m.

Zip World

Zip World is an outdoor adventure activity company based in Penrhyn Quarry, Wales. The zip is the longest zipline in the UK. Zip world operates four sites in Wales all with which are driving distance of Bethesda, they primarily focused on zip lines and outdoor adventure activity courses.

Tryfan

Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) Summit

Snowdon  is the highest mountain in Snowdonia national park and Wales standing at 1085m. There are many locations in which you can start the walk up the most popular mountain in Wales.

 

Dinorwic Slate Quarry

Dinorwic quarry is a large slate quarry, located between the villages of Dinorwig and Llanberis in Wales. When Dinorwic quarry was operational it was the second largest quarry in Wales after the nearby Penrhyn quarry near Bethesda.

Glyderau

The Glyderau is a mountain group in Snowdonia which is near Bethesda. The Glyders are one of the most interesting walks in Snowdonia due to the bizarre rock formations and challenging walks..

Llyn Ogwen

Llyn Ogwen is a lake located in the north of Snowdonia National park in Ogwen Valley. Llyn Ogwen is nestled inbetween Tryfan and Pen Yr Ole Wen. The lake is easily accessible and provides majestic scnerey in all directions when visiting.

Walks In Bethesda

Bethesda is a very popular area in Snowdonia with plenty of people passing  by and staying every day. The Snowdonia national park is one of the best places in the UK for adventurous activities hiking being one of them. Bethesda is surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery and is home to some of the most popular walks in the Snowdonia.  There is a variety of walks around Bethesda varying in difficulty and length to suit beginner hikers and more experienced hikers. Below are some of the breath taking walks within the Bethesda area that the Snowdonia National Park has to offer. 

Bethesda Hiking Trails

1. Snowdon via Llanberis path

Distance -      14.6 km

Time -                6 h

Elevation -      989 m

Difficulty -       Hard

This route up mount Snowdon is considered the easiest route to Snowdonia's highest peak. The route start in Llanberis and steadily climbs all the way to the summit of Snowdon, it is an out and back route so once at the summit you are able to retrace your footsteps back to the start point. This walk is perfect for beginner hikers looking to challenge themselves. Find this route here

2. Tryfan Circular

Distance -      4.3 km

Time -                2 h

Elevation -      581 m

Difficulty -       Hard

Tryfan is one of the most recognisable peaks in the UK. Although just a short walk from car park, Tryfan is a challenging route as there is a lot of scrambling up the North ridge and then back down the south ridge. The name, Tryfan means three rocks, referring to the three rocky peaks that can be seen from most angles of this iconic mountain. Find this route here

3. Glyder Fawr & Glyder Fach

Distance -      8.7 km

Time -                4.30 h 

Elevation -      776 m

Difficulty -       Hard

This circular route around the Glyderau range is one of the most popular in Snowdonia. there are several walking and scrambling routes leading to its summits. The routes up these two mountains are for experienced hikers as there are some tough scrambles especially when going up bristly ridge.  The walk has sensational views over to Snowdon and to Pen Yr Ole Wen.  Find this route here

4. Llyn Idwal Circular

Distance -      4.8 km

Time -                1. 30 h

Elevation -      256 m

Difficulty -       Easy

This is a fairly low level easy route around the tranquil Llyn Idwal. The trail starts at the Ogwen valley car park,  the path starts across the Afon Idwal, through the moorland to Llyn Idwal. The path then continues on the Llwybr y Carw path, tracing the northern edge of the lake and heading south along the banks. Once you travel around the whole body of water you follow your footsteps back to the start point. Find this route here

5. Pen Yr Ole Wen 

Distance -      6.9 km

Time -                3.5 h

Elevation -      706 m

Difficulty -       Hard

This route up Pen Yr Ole Wen is a very steep and challenging walk. The walk starts on the main road and then start the steep ascent up to the summit of Pen Yr Ole Wen. Pen Yr Ole Wen is the most southern peak in the Carneddau range. Find this route here
