Introduction To Grasmere

Grasmere is a village located in the heart of The Lake District National park just north of Ambleside. Grasmere is arguably Cumbria’s most popular village, it has plenty of independent gift shops, places to stay and eat. Grasmere is surrounded by spectacular fells and is a start point to many popular walks. The majority  of the buildings in Grasmere are fairly new and date back to 19th or early 20th Century.

Things To Do In Grasmere

Helm Crag

Helm Crag is one of the 214 wainwrights which stands at 405m. This small walk to conquer one of the Lakeland fells starts in Grasmere and provides view of all surrounding fells.

Sourmilk Ghyll

Sour Milk Ghyll is a plunge pool just a short walk from Grasmere village centre. When swimming in this plunge pool you can take in the stunning views of the nearby fells.  Further up from sourmilk gill you will find Easedale tarn and Tarn cr

Grasmere Lake

Grasmere lake is one of the smaller lakes is the Lake District with a depth of 21m and a length of 1.5km. On Grasmere you are able to swim, paddleboard and kayak on this lake. There is a small island on the Lake in which you are able to explore.

Grasmere Gingerbread shop

The notorious Grasmere gingerbread shop was Established in 1854 by Victorian cook Sarah Nelson. The gingerbread shop in Grasmere is the most popular place in the UK to get gingerbread.

Rydal Caves

Rydal Cave is a large cave underneath Loughrigg fell and just above Rydal water. This cave is a stunning beauty spot in the Lakes, You are able to enter by walking on the stepping stones in the shallow lake into the depths of this enormous cave.

 

Easedale Tarn

Easedale Tarn is a tarn which lies underneath the Tarn crag summit. It is a short walk from Grasmere village centre at an altitude of 280m. on a hot day you can enjoy a nice swim in the tarn after a long hike in the surrounding area.

Walks In Grasmere

Grasmere is a very popular village in the Lake District with plenty of people passing  by and staying every day. The Lake District is one of the best places in the UK for adventurous activities hiking being one of them. Grasmere is surrounded by rolling hills and fells with dramatic scenery.  There is a variety of walks around Grasmere varying in difficulty and length to suit beginner hikers and more experienced hikers. Below are some of the breathtaking walks within the Grasmere area that the Lake District has to offer. 

Grasmere Hiking Trails

1. The Greenburn Round

Distance -      12.9 km

Time -                4 h

Elevation -      682 m

Difficulty -       Moderate 

This route summits 4 of the Lake Districts wainwrights, the route starts with a gradual ascent of Steel Fell, then continues across marshy grassland towards Calf Crag. Once at the summit of calf crag you make your way across the wide ridge towards the last two wainwrights, Gibson Knott and Helm Crag this path is straight forward but unclear at times. Once at the top of Helm crag you follow your footsteps back and take a zig zag path down to your right and back to the star point.  Find this route here

2. Grasmere Lake Circular

Distance -      5.1 km

Time -                1.50h

Elevation -      266 m

Difficulty -       Easy

This route is an easy low level walk in which you can take in a perspectives of Grasmere and the surrounding area. On this low level walk you will see the stunning Lake Grasmere, surrounding fells, enchanting woodlands and some historic sites. This walk is perfect for families and beginner hikers. 3.  Tarn Crag

Distance -      11.1 km

Time -                3.20 h

Elevation -      682 m

Difficulty -       Moderate

This route up Tarn Crag one of the Lake District wainwrights is a straight out and back walk to the summit. You can start this walk in Grasmere village centre and along the way up to the summit you will pass two points of interest which are sourmilk Ghyll and then Easdale Tarn. Once at Easedale tarn you will follow the path around the right hand side of the Tarn and ascent until you reach the summit of Tarn Crag. Find this route here

4. Silver How Circular

Distance -      4.7km

Time -                2 h

Elevation -      353 m

Difficulty -       Easy

The trail heads out of Grasmere village centre and past Allan Bank, then across some farmland fields. This trail then goes heads upwards towards a narrow riverbed which soon ends. After this you will Cross Wray Gill will, Brigstone Moss is then passed and finally the summit of Silver How is reached. Find this route here

5. Loughrigg Fell and Rydal Cave Circular

Distance -       4.7 km

Time -                2 h

Elevation -      311 m

Difficulty -       Easy

This short walk takes you up to one of the Lake Districts smallest wainwrights Loughrigg Fell. The walk begins crossing the river connecting Rydal water to Grasmere Lake and then continues to to the short sharp ascent to the summit of Loughrigg fells where you can take in the surrounding views, especially of Grasmere village. This route heads down towards Rydal Caves and then back to the start point. Find this route here

Grasmere History

Grasmere's history dates back to the 14th century with its farming trade and woollen textiles trade. By the late 17th century slate quarrying started at the white moss quarry not far from the village centre. Grasmere's early signs of popularity were in the mid 18th century from the Grasmere gingerbread which popularity spread across the country. in the late 18th century Grasmere's tourist businesses grew with all the hotels and lodging houses.

How To Get To Grasmere

There is a vast amount of people who visit Grasmere every year and there are multiple transport options on how to get to Grasmere. Grasmere is in the heart of the Lake District and is well connected to the major towns within the Lakes.

1. Train To Grasmere

The closest train stations to Grasmere are Windermere train station and Penrith train station. From these points you will have to either get a taxi or bus to Grasmere. Which is 20 minutes from Windermere and 40 minutes form Penrith. If travelling by coaches from these points you will catch the 555 from Windermere and the X5 Or X4 from Penrith to Keswick then catch the 555 from Keswick to Grasmere.

2. Car To Grasmere

Grasmere is fairly accessible by car from the north and south of the Lake District. Most likely tourists would be taking the m6 north or south bound to the Lake District. If coming from the north you would then join the A66 to Keswick then the A591 to Grasmere. If coming from then south then you can join the A590 from the M6 then follow onto the A591 until you reach Grasmere.

3. Bus To Grasmere

The buses in the Lake District are fairly efficient and priced. Once you get within the Lake District area the 555 connects to all major locations on the A591 which runs through the heart of the Lakes. If travelling from the north you would catch the X4 or X5 bus which connects Cockermouth to Penrith going through Keswick, then you would catch the 555 from Keswick to Grasmere. From the south you would catch the 555 from most likely Windermere or Kendal to Grasmere.

4. Ferry To Grasmere

If travelling to Grasmere by ferry you will most likely be coming from Isle Of Man, Northern Ireland or Ireland. From Isle of Man you would arrive in Heysham port and drive from Heysham to Grasmere which is approximately a 1 hour long journey.  If travelling from Northern Ireland or Ireland you would catch a ferry to Liverpool which is then approximately a 2 hour drive. 

5. Flight To Grasmere

The nearest airport to Grasmere is Manchester airport, from Manchester airport you can get a direct train straight to Windermere then a bus to Grasmere or drive from Manchester airport which is approximately a 2 hour  drive.
